History of the
Stuart Neighborhood
As one of the earliest suburbs of Kalamazoo, The Stuart Neighborhood became home to Kalamazoo’s biggest names as early as 1854.

As one of the earliest suburbs of Kalamazoo, The Stuart Neighborhood became home to Kalamazoo’s biggest names as early as 1854. Charles Stuart, eminent politician & Senator, was one of these people. Residing in his Italian Villa, still situated on Stuart Avenue, Stuart began to sell plots of land to other merchants and businessmen for the building of their estates.
As years progressed through the 1870's and 1880's, Elm Street, Woodward Avenue & Stuart Avenue started to see an array of homes being built that reflected the prestige of Gilded Age America. The once traditional Italianate homes now found themselves sitting next door to the newly constructed “Queen Annes”, which showcased decoration and ornamentation in a way that had never been seen before. By the late 1890s, the Stuart Neighborhood was well populated and proved to be highly desirable suburb. The neighborhood continued over the next 100 years to serve Kalamazoo by providing dwellings that remind us of our rich & noteworthy history.
Today, the Stuart Neighborhood contains a variety of residences as well as public buildings. Many of the larger homes are either operating as multifamily dwellings or being converted back to their original use as single family residences. The neighborhood also is home to Woodward Elementary School and various churches. In 1965, the primary traffic routes that run through the neighborhood were converted to 1-way, heavy traffic streets. Today, residents look forward to see them converted back to their original 2-way configuration in the near future, ensuring a quieter and safer neighborhood.
